We are so excited to welcome our new students, year one Kindergarten students and new staff members! The Angus Morrison Elementary School (AMES) Library and Learning Commons weekly book and open book exchanges are up and running.  STEAM, coding, robotics, and literacy partnerships will continue and our first Scholastic Book Fair will be open during Student Led Conferences in late November.  We look forward to seeing you at Meet the Teacher Night on Oct. 12th and at our school Terry Fox Event on Oct. 13th.  Yours in Literacy,   Mrs. G. We have had a great time designing, building, and operating our LEGO EV3 robots in our Grade 7 and 8 program.  Students have created some very unique robots and shared them with students from Grades 1, 2 and 4.    Next up,  using Makey Makey circuit boards and the Scratch coding website to create musical  instruments and other student-designed products with our Grade 6 and Grade 5/6 students!

Here’s to another great year of reading, literacy events, coding, research and learning more about the wonderful diversity in our school and board!  Coming soon – Blue Spruce 2023 returns for our Kindergarten to Grade 3 students.  Family Literacy Day is January 27 and we will be learning more about Chinese New Year – Jan. 22 to Feb. 9th.

Our Scholastic Book Fair will take place for class previews and shopping each day for students during regular school hours (see Class Visit Schedule) and open to families on Wednesday, November 16 (Open to 5:30 p.m), Thursday, November 18 (Open to 8:00 p.m. during Conferences), Friday, November 19 (Open 9:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. during Conferences) and Monday, November 21 to 2:45 p.m. (for student shopping and contest draws).  Book fair flyers will be coming home soon!   We take cash, debit, credit cards and Apple Pay.  You can send money in labelled envelopes with your young students and their teacher and/or Gr. 8 Leaders will assist them with shopping during our fun class visits!  The Angus Morrison Dragons students and staff LOVE their book fairs so students are encouraged to dress up….”Jungle animals or jungle gear…think Dora and Diego….” to celebrate “Lions, Tigers and Books…..oh my!”.  Their names will be entered for a chance to win a book fair prize!

For parents, friends and family that can’t join us in the school, be sure to join us online with our Virtual Book Fair Extension! Our online shop will be open on the first day of our Fair which is November 16th to midnight on November 21st. Online books will arrive at the school just after the fair ends in an envelope that can be sent home with your child OR be picked up at the school if they are part of your holiday shopping this year.

Our Library/Learning Commons programs include weekly book exchanges, Scholastic Book Fairs (late November and early May), author visits, Blue Spruce 2023 (FDK to Gr. 3), STEAM Challenges, coding and robotics, storybook walks and many more exciting literacy and technology experiences.  Here’s to a great year learning together!

We are so excited that our top 3 Blue Spruce 2022 nominated books were also the top 3 across all of Ontario.  We enjoyed our Blue Spruce 2022 Celebration in the Library/Learning Commons with Gr. 7 and 8 helpers! We coded the Code and Go Mice, operated the Dash Robots, built using STEAM materials just like in one of our fav books, 48 Grasshopper Estates, and learned how to draw Harley – the star of the winning Blue Spruce book!  Here are the results for our school and for Ontario:

This year we are excited to help decide on this year’s Blue Spruce 2022 Winner!  To find out more, please visit the Ontario Library Association’s Forest of Reading Nominees.  Students from Kindergarten to Grade 3 will be reading each story and following up with special activities and meeting the authors and/or illustrators through the OLA.  Voting begins the last week of April!

In celebration of Education Week, Angus Morrison Elementary School will be having their 2^nd  Scholastic VIRTUAL Book Fair  from Tuesday, May 4^th to Friday, May 21^st for our school and all of our Learn@Home Classes!   Please note: due to Covid restrictions, SOME of the books offered are the SAME as the Nov/Dec Fair, but there are many new ones too…..
